Short version: on an enterprise drone, the payload does the work and the airframe just carries it. Choosing the right sensor is what turns a flight into a useful result. Here is what each main payload type is for, in plain English.
RGB and zoom cameras
A standard high-resolution color camera is the starting point for photography, video, mapping, and general documentation. A zoom camera adds reach, letting you inspect detail from a safe distance, which is why it is a staple for tower, powerline, and structure work.
Thermal
A thermal camera reads surface temperature, revealing heat patterns the eye cannot see. It finds overheating electrical joints, missing insulation, trapped moisture, and people in the dark. For measurement you want a radiometric thermal sensor that records a temperature for every pixel. Our thermal guide goes deeper.
Multispectral
A multispectral sensor captures specific bands of light beyond what a normal camera sees, which lets it map plant health and stress before it is visible on the ground. It is the core tool for precision agriculture and a growing one in environmental work.
LiDAR
A LiDAR payload fires laser pulses to build a dense, direct 3D measurement of a scene. It can capture the bare ground through gaps in vegetation and pick up thin structures cleanly, which makes it valuable for survey, corridor mapping, and forestry. Our mapping guide compares it with photogrammetry.
How to choose a payload
- Start from the deliverable, not the sensor. Decide what you must hand over, then pick the payload that produces it.
- Match resolution and sensor type to the smallest defect or feature you need to catch.
- For measurement work, require radiometric thermal or survey-grade positioning as appropriate.
- Confirm the payload is supported on your airframe, and that the whole system meets any compliance requirement.
