Short version: flying beyond visual line of sight, or BVLOS, is the capability that unlocks long inspections, large surveys, and delivery at scale. It is also the most tightly controlled kind of drone flight. Here is what it means and where it stands.
What BVLOS is
The standard rules require you to keep your drone within your own visual line of sight. BVLOS is flying past that point, where you rely on the aircraft's systems and procedures rather than your eyes to stay safe. It is what lets a single operator inspect miles of pipeline or powerline, or survey a very large site, in one mission.
Why it matters
Line-of-sight flying caps how much ground one operator can cover. BVLOS removes that cap, which is why it is the key to long linear inspections, large-area mapping, drone-as-first-responder programs, and delivery. For many enterprise operations, BVLOS is the difference between a pilot project and a scalable service.
How you fly BVLOS today
Under current rules, routine BVLOS generally requires an FAA waiver. You apply and show that your aircraft, technology, and procedures keep the operation safe without a visual observer, often using detect-and-avoid technology and detailed operating plans. Where the rules are heading
The FAA has been developing a dedicated rule to make routine BVLOS more standardized, often referred to as Part 108, which would reduce the need for individual waivers for qualifying operations.
